This river sets the scene for my first step, the Papuan highlands. More particularly between Mendi and Mount Hagen.
This is an age shows. This is an opportunity to attend the dances of many tribes, and also to admire the amazing costumes, paintings, headdresses worn by the Highlanders.
Second Stage, New Britain. North, Rabaul, a town evacuated in 1994 due to the eruption of this volcano you see below. Ash accumulate constantly, giving an aspect lunar landscapes.
But I'm not in New Britain for its volcano. The Baining people practice fire dances as part of initiation rites. I have the chance to attend one of them.
At night, a bonfire is lit and powered brush that generate high flames. A group of young men wearing masks of extraordinary engage in a dance during which they pass through the fire barefoot causing great showers of sparks. At the same time some twenty singers rhythm to the movements of a beautiful song, punctuated by bamboo hit the ground.
These dancers are willing to give me these masks at the end of the rite.
Note that I am not the author of the 3 following photos taken at night, I could not take good enough.
